Karl draws short straw

Sunday Tasmanian - Tassie Living - - Movies - AN IDIOT ABROAD: THE BUCKET LIST – CLIMB MT FUJI TDT, Saturday, 9.30pm

THE humour of travel comedy show An Idiot Abroad comes from watching ‘‘ idiot’’ Karl Pilkington moan about the awful toilets and foreign food even as he gazes on another incredible destination most people would give their right arm to see. Contrary to appearances, comedian and former radio colleague Ricky Gervais says Pilkington is actually quite smart. ‘‘ It’s a bit of marketing, the idiot bit. He’s a smart, wise man with what seem like strange, peculiar little philosophies, but if you look into them, they’re pretty watertight, you know?

‘‘ Why he’s so good for documentaries is he’s got no filter. He says what comes into his head, without prejudice. Right or wrong, he says it.’’

Gervais has just filmed test footage for a new travel special, teaming Pilkington with dwarf Warwick Davis, called Short Way Round.

‘‘ Karl rides around the world with Warwick in the basket. When I told Karl about it he didn’t say ‘ that’s ridiculous’, he said [ Gervais impersonates Karl’s whingeing tone], ’ So I’m doing all the f------ pedalling am I?’.’’
