Buffalo boys cheat death

Sunday Tasmanian - Tassie Living - - Eguide Television - DEBBIE SCHIPP ICE PILOTS NWT, 7MATE, tonight, 6.30

SUFFICE to say these dudes are fuelled by adrenalin. Unless of course you think landing a 20- tonne DC4 on an ice runway in a snowstorm is a totally normal thing to be doing.

The hugely popular docu- series follows the adventures of renegade Arctic airline Buffalo Airways, in Canada’s far north, and involves nail- biting challenges and intimate personal stories featuring the pilots, engineers and crew who put it all on the line flying vintage warplanes across the last frontier on Earth.

The pilots are based in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, and are mainly responsible for flying supplies into the mines up that way, which are cut off by road in winter.

Chief pilot Buffalo Joe is a hard man, not easily impressed, but as boss of the outfit, you’ve got to survive him and his boot camp before you fly his beloved vintage fleet of World War II cargo planes.

Worth watching just to hear Joe sing the praises of his planes: ‘‘ You wanna feel flying, strap a DC to your ass.’’
