Whole new ball game
BASEBALL has never really been a brainless throw ball, hit ball, catch ball kinda game but rather a complex sport that is as much about stats as it is about bats, balls and jaunty outfits. And when former pro- baseballer turned GM of the financially struggling Oakland Athletics Billy Beane took statistical analysis and applied it to picking a team that could compete with the richer clubs in the US, it turned how players were valued on its head. Moneyball is that story, and is based on the real events in the early noughties which added up to Beane ( played here by Brad Pitt) and his partnership with a rookie number- cruncher ( Jonah Hill) changing the sport forever. It’s an intelligent film with a fascinating underdog theme, but also a little dry and underdeveloped in part and relies on melodrama for a lot of its emotional impact. Extras: The DVD features a short blooper reel and a few deleted scenes plus featurettes on how Beane’s vision changed the game and how they got the film’s baseball play to look the goods. NOT VIEWED.
