Brian snaps up dream gig
IT IS Brian Nankervis’s time to shine.
After doing hundreds of audience warm- up gigs for TV shows, the popular stand- up comedian is finally hosting his own program.
Nankervis made regular appearances as eccentric poet Raymond J. Bartholomeuz on Hey Hey It’s Saturday in the 1980s and 1990s.
He was also a regular on Let the Blood Run Free and Jimeoin.
In recent times, Nankervis is the co- creator and adjudicator for TV music show Rockwiz.
Then there are those countless audience warm- up and wrangling gigs for shows including The Panel and Thank God You’re Here.
Something must have worked because Working Dog, the makers of The Panel and TGYH, tapped Nankervis to host Pictures of You.
Pictures of You is an interview show using old photos to chart the lives of prominent Aussies.
Noni Hazlehurst, Bruce Mcavaney, Peter Garrett, Frank Woodley, Denise Scott, Anthony Field and Megan Washington feature.
‘‘ Working Dog rang and said, ‘ Are you available to work on a TV pilot?’ and I assumed that it would be to do the warm- up, so I told them, ‘ I can’t’,’’ Nankervis says with a laugh.
It took a call from Working Dog executive producer Michael Hirsh to make Nankervis realise they wanted him to host.
‘‘ It is a dream come true to do a show that doesn’t involve getting the audience excited and then handing over the fun [ to someone else],’’ Nankervis says.
