Time to tackle the evil trolls

IF THE name Skylanders rings a bell, that’s because the series surfaced last year as an innovative console game, blending collectable toy figurines with an action role- playing video game. It was quite a hit. This latest outing arrives for Apple’s touch devices and is not the same game fans of the series have come to know. Instead, it’s an on- rails shooter that merely incorporates characters and elements from the original game.

In fact, the only physical tie- in with the original video game is that you can instantly unlock in- game characters of any of the toy figurines you own by using a unique code that came in the box. Alternatively, new characters can only be accessed by spending precious gems you earn while playing.

While the entire Skylanders cast can be unlocked, unfortunately none of their unique abilities from the console game are present. This makes it pretty pointless to buy new characters.

Unlike the free- roaming environment of last year’s console game, Skylanders Cloud Patrol has more in common with the slicing- anddicing action of the popular Fruit Ninja games.

The main gameplay involves firing at enemy trolls scattered around the screen by tapping on them. When you slide a finger across every enemy without coming into contact with a deadly bomb, this multiples your score. As you complete each short level, the intensity steadily increases.

The aim is to keep going for as long as you can before touching a bomb or being hit by return fire, thus ending the game.

For an extra challenge and bonus score, you’re presented with several goals to complete during each round.

Successfully completing these goals adds a bonus to your overall score as well as levelling up your character.

This fresh spin on the series may leave fans wishing for more interaction with their cherished toy figurines, though it’s more than worth the small asking price.
