Clever ipad cover- ups
An ipad can be transformed into a laptop or a fashion statement – or even do something more practical, such as simply run for longer – with these new accessories, writes Jennifer Dudley- Nicholson
As seen in the hands of Karl Lagerfeld himself, this Chanel ipad case is both stylish and surprisingly practical. Its quilted lambskin cover might be typical of the French fashion house, but it also protects the Apple tablet within. Two external pockets also let users carry smartphones or wi- fi hot spot generators without the need for a second bag. Inside the zipped case, the new ipad is held in place with leather on one side, while a large pocket on the other side serves to keep papers in place. Its suede leather lining also helps wipe fingerprints from the ipad’s screen. There’s only one major downside to this case – the fact it costs almost three times as much as the top ipad itself. Clearly designed by a writer, this ipad keyboard case has thought of almost everything. The keyboard in this case closely mimics Apple’s Bluetooth creation, with island- style keys that are easy to tap, as well as a row of shortcuts for cutting, copying, locking the screen and more. Unlike other keyboard cases, this Adonit Writer sits to attention at all times, whether on a desk or your lap, with the help of magnets in its base and a folding back panel. Typists can pull on the keyboard to detach it from the base for greater comfort. The Writer case does add weight and it won’t turn the ipad screen on and off, but it’s otherwise hard to fault. Great for turning a tablet into a laptop. This humble but stylish brick can save your ipad from becoming the same. Mophie’s Powerstation is essentially a mobile power supply, with a soft- touch finish, metal- sided edges and a shape just smaller than an iphone. It is more powerful than most portable chargers because the Powerstation can automatically swap from the low- wattage needs of a mobile phone to the 2.1- amp demands of an ipad. Plug this 4000mah battery pack into a new ipad and it will add an extra 10 per cent to its batteries in just over 30 minutes. It won’t come close to fully recharging a new ipad, but it will give you hours to find a power point. Or it can fill an iphone battery four times over. It won’t walk the catwalk, but this new ipad case is thoughtfully made and thoroughly useful. Designed for the third ipad, the STM Bags Grip case surrounds the tablet with hard, colourful plastic without adding significant bulk to its profile. The Grip, so named for its textured exterior, hugs its charge firmly, while the case’s lid features a suede lining to protect and clean fingerprints from its screen. The lid also triggers the tablet’s wake/ sleep function. Two pop- out stands sit on the back of this case, giving users a choice of viewing angles when seated at a desk, though the hard case does wobble during typing. Available in four colours, including blue and orange. With top- model ipads costing $ 899, there’s every reason to be cautious about leaving it lying about. Kensington provides a lock- up solution in the Secureback Case that can see it chained to a pole like a bicycle. This case is a white plastic creation that comes in two parts and clips to the ipad’s exterior. A panel slides in the back, securing the pieces and providing a connection for a Clicksafe lock that is secured with a key. This arrangement would be impressive if the case itself wasn’t made of such flimsy plastic. Potential ipad thieves will at least find themselves facing a challenge when this cover is in play.
