Reunited for Revenge

Sunday Tasmanian - Tassie Living - - Eguide Television - COLIN VICKERY REVENGE SOUTHERN CROSS, Monday, 8.30pm

HENRY Czerny owes a lot to Aussie director Phillip Noyce.

It was Noyce who gave Czerny his first big Hollywood break, action blockbuster Clear and Present Danger opposite Harrison Ford.

Now Czerny has reunited with Noyce for Revenge.

It is the Canadian actor’s first major TV series. Noyce is a producer and directed the pilot.

After Danger, Czerny starred opposite Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible and alongside Liam Neeson in The A- Team.

Czerny has had to dump the testosterone for Revenge. Most of his scenes are with Emily VanCamp and Madeleine Stowe. And what juicy scenes they are. Czerny plays wealthy Hamptons patriarch Conrad Grayson. Stowe is his glamorous but scheming wife Victoria.

VanCamp’s Amanda Clarke, using the name of Emily Thorne, has been wreaking vengeance on the Graysons for their part in the wrongful conviction of her father David for terrorism.

Conrad was Amanda’s first target, drugged to expose his affair with Victoria’s best friend Lydia Davis, and the house of cards has been unravelling since.

‘‘ This is a struggle between someone who wants to take a family down [ Amanda] and a family who has done everything to stay on top [ the Graysons].’’

The scenes between Conrad and Victoria as they try to carve up the spoils of separation have been wonderfully catty.

Czerny says that watching VanCamp and Stowe go hammer and tongs as Amanda becomes romantically involved with Grayson’s son Daniel ( VanCamp’s real- life flame Josh Bowman) has been priceless.

‘‘ These are beautiful, intelligent women trying to one- up each other,’’ he says. ‘‘ Emily has a sweetness but a savvy in her.’’

Czerny says his biggest challenge hasn’t been going from the male world of action films to female- driven Revenge.

Instead, it has been simply adapting to the pace of TV.

‘‘ I call Phillip ‘ the benevolent steamroller’,’’ Czerny laughs.

‘‘ He likes to put all the big screen [ movie] detail into a television schedule which is close to impossible.

‘‘ He wanted to make sure that the characters we were starting off with had the layers that we could peel off as the series developed.

‘‘ He knew he had to deliver and that the actors had to bring their best game.’’

FIRST TARGET: Henry Czerny as Conrad Grayson in Revenge.
