Hooked implausible idea
IF you’re a bit of an angler and delight in getting the line wet you’ll be all too familiar with the idea of patience.
It’s a required virtue of the pastime and if you’re planning to invest your time in this very slight romantic comedy/ drama it will be essential for getting anything out of it. It’s a very gentle flick which follows slightly obsessive fisheries expert Dr Fred Jones ( Ewan McGregor), who is approached by a rich Yemeni Sheikh’s investment adviser ( Emily Blunt) to help bring salmon fishing to his country. Seeing it as a laughably unsuitable venture, it’s not until the British government gets onside in the form of a tenacious press agent ( Kristin Scott Thomas) that he’s blackmailed into making the project a reality. It takes its time to get moving . . . and then takes a little bit more . . . but as it unfolds the charms come. The plot contrivances are forced and the final act is weak but romantics should find the breezy tale somewhat appealing. Extras: N/ A
