Q&A

with PIPER PERABO

Sunday Tasmanian - Tassie Living - - Television - COLIN VICKERY

PIPER Perabo was born in Texas in 1976 and rose to fame in the hit movie Coyote Ugly. She also starred in the Cheaper By The Dozen movies and The Prestige, co- starring Aussie heartthrob Hugh Jackman. In her latest TV role, US drama Covert Affairs, Perabo plays CIA agent Annie Walker.

Q: How would you describe Covert Affairs?

A: It’s a bit more fantasy/ escapism than Spooks. This is as serious as any crime drama. Covert Affairs has a little of the ‘‘ James Bond exotic locations, fashion thrill ride’’.

Q: How did you land the part of Annie?

A: They came looking for me. I had been looking for a television role for a while, looking for something I could really love, and when this show came to me I liked the premise of it. I liked that it was a woman who was struggling to balance a very demanding career with her private life, and I could really relate to that. She trusts her instincts, which I find really helpful in a character. When she doesn’t know what to do, she sounds herself out and trusts herself to make the decisions. I think that’s an admirable quality to get behind.

Q: Were you happy to get a Golden Globe nomination?

A: It was so thrilling. I had no idea they were even thinking about that. I was shocked.

Q: And there’s more to come?

A: Yes, we’ve been picked up for a third season and our network is really behind us and keeps giving us more leeway to do more.

Q: You got your big break on Coyote Ugly. What are your memories of that?

A: It was kind of a blur when I made it because I was so young. It was only my third film, but I had a great time. Adam Garcia had just done a big run of Saturday Night Fever in London, and I’m so lucky he was the guy cast because he was such a sweet, strong man.

Q: What attracted you to sci- fi epic Looper, with Bruce Willis?

A: It’s directed by Rian Johnson, who made Brick, and when I heard he was going to write and direct a new one, I went racing for it.

Q: Can you tell us about the plot?

A: He [ Rian] has kept it a little secret, but it’s set in this sort of Blade Runner future. It’s going to be great.
