Blonde ambition collides in Smash

Sunday Tasmanian - Tassie Living - - Television - ZOE NAUMAN

ALREADY filming its second season in the US, this tale of the birth of a musical and the trials and tribulations on and off stage between the characters is gripping from curtain- up.

With star power including Debra Messing, Jack Davenport and Anjelica Huston among the cast, it is like an adult version of Glee with the plot lines to match.

Already seen here on Austar, the story revolves around the creation of a new Broadway musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe and this opener introduces us to key characters Karen Cartwright ( played by American Idol contestant Katharine McPhee, pictured) and Ivy Lynn ( played by seasoned Broadway star Megan Hilty). While Karen has a spectacular voice, she is still looking for her big break, and Ivy is well practiced in treading the boards.

The girls go head to head for the lead role in Marilyn and the series follows their story.
