Crazy in love

Sunday Tasmanian - Tassie Living - - TELEVISION - ZOE NAUMAN

THE documentary film Tabloid by Academy Award winner Errol Morris tells the completely bizarre tale of Joyce McKinney, who was the ’ 70s equivalent of Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan all rolled into one.

American McKinney became a UK tabloid overnight sensation when it was discovered she had flown to England and kidnapped her former fiance, Kirk Anderson, a devout Mormon, and held him captive tied to a bed in a remote cottage in Devon so she could have sex with him.

McKinney herself documents her exploits, and justifies her actions, while members of the British press give their take on this crazy tale.

In her eyes she was a young girl madly in love, but others had a much darker take on it.

The woman may be eccentric, but with her quick wit and 168- point IQ, she’s never boring.

When asked how far she’d go for Anderson, she said: ‘‘ I would have skied down Mt Everest nude with a carnation up my nose.’’

Obsession, in other words, doesn’t begin to cover it.
