Crime time viewing

Sunday Tasmanian - Tassie Living - - Dvds -

CONSIDERING how strong the first season of this 1920s set gangster series was, it’s a delight to see it maintain its first- class credentials second time around and there isn’t a better crime drama coming out of the US at the moment. It widens its scope and dramatic appeal in the follow- up season, which still has Steve Buscemi’s Nucky Thompson ( pictured with Kelly Macdonald as Margaret) centre screen, but now has the crime boss and unofficial ruler of Atlantic City facing criminal charges and a disgruntled protege Jimmy Darmody ( Michael Pitt) who’s trying to dethrone him and take over the bootlegging empire. Again, all facets of the series are top notch and if you are looking for the creme de la creme of the genre, look no further. Extras: The six audio commentaries with various cast and crew members reveal much about key episodes including the season opener and finale, plus there are featurettes exploring the styles and trends of the 1920s, the whiz bang sets of season two and the new characters, as well as character dossiers that allow you to track the major players.
