TODAY remembers the end of World War I and, in many parts of Central Europe, is also St Martin’s Day, traditionally celebrated with roast goose, the appearance of their innards and bones interpreted as forecasting the severity or otherwise of the approaching winter. It’s also the day when good ol’ Gough Whitlam’s goose was cooked and an unseasonal political winter descended on Australia.
