BRINK has won South Africa’s biggest literary prize three times and his new book is based on a real woman, bought and sold by one of the author’s own forebears. Philida tells the story of a woman’s desire to survive and be free. Set in 1832, she lodges a complaint against her slave owner, who has reneged on a promise to set her free. For her troubles, Philida is bankrupted and sold to new owners. But she is not willing to accept her fate. Philida likes her new owner better than the previous one, but the fact remains she is still a slave. Will her quest for freedom succeed?
