SOME plants need an occasional extra- deep watering during hot, dry conditions, otherwise they shrivel and die. Among the most vulnerable are beautiful weeping Japanese maples, especially those with finely dissected, coloured foliage ( pictured). The water should be allowed to slowly soak so the subsoil is also saturated.
