FOR valuable crops of winter beetroot, the seeds must be sown over the next week or so. Germination can be hastened if the seeds are poured into a glass of water containing half a teaspoon of dissolved boron. Allow to soak overnight, drain the water and then refill with fresh. All viable seeds will gradually sink to the bottom while dead ones will float and can be easily scooped off the top. Sow the swollen seeds immediately into moist soil.
