DRIFT ( M)
IN the early 1970s, two knockabout brothers ( Myles Pollard and Xavier Samuel) living on the south coast of WA struggle to establish the region’s first surf shop. With a few tweaks and better writing, this might have made a fair Australian match for that epic American surfing drama Big Wednesday. Instead, Drift rarely gets upright on its board before it tumbles off and must start over again. At best, the movie is a likeable, if lunk- headed shambles. At worst? Well, it isn’t quite as bad as all that. Though a running time of almost two hours is severely testing a fleeting friendship. Surfing sequences are solid without being sensational. Co- star Sam Worthington ( Avatar) contributes little as a ginger- bearded hippie wastrel.
