Samsung, $ 345 harveynorman. com. au

BUYING a laptop for Mother’s Day might sound extravagant, but it need not be expensive.

Samsung’s Chromebook, for example, will set you back just $ 345 as this lightweight laptop is designed for web use, basic word processing and tasks that don’t demand a lot of a computing grunt.

The 1.1kg device has a silver, plastic body that could be mistaken for stainless steel at a distance, and its island- style keyboard is easy to use.

Its 11.6- inch screen won’t win beauty contests – users must angle it correctly for a good view – but its touchpad is functional and its 1.7GHz dual- core processor and 2GB RAM delivers Google apps such as Drive, Calendar and Gmail ably.

Its 16GB storage doesn’t leave much room for large fi les, but those are designed to be stored in the cloud anyway.

It’s a capable, lightweight, lighton- cash solution for those who need a mobile computer.
