LONG grass and weeds are already growing vigorously around small, deciduous fruit trees. If uncontrolled, this growth robs the soil of nutrients before trees come into spring growth. Winter is a great time to apply heavy mulches directly over competing weeds, smothering them. It then rots down to feed and enrich the soil so the trees get a flying start in spring.
