Eight wannabe vets training at Perth’s Murdoch University are finally getting to the pointy end of their studies. Their final year of study puts them into a crash course at the vet teaching hospital, where all that theory must be put into practice. They are quickly learning it’s not just their animal patients that need treating – it’s also their owners. Tonight, fifth- year student Susie’s first case brings her face- to- face with the cold, hard reality of cash: just because you can do tests and operate on an animal, doesn’t mean you will be able to. Back in fourth- year surgery school, Jade is agonising over her first incision.
