STAR TREK: INTO DARKNESS ( M)

Stars: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto Director: JJ Abrams Available: Now on DVD and Blu- ray Abrams proves his Star Trek reinvigoration has some real legs with another enjoyable, stylish, action- packed franchise instalment, with the Enterprise crew this time trying to stop a terrorist in Starfleet’s ranks.

DARK SKIES ( M)

Stars: Keri Russell, Josh Hamilton Director: Scott Stewart Available: Now on DVD and Blu- ray It’s all in the build- up with this solidly freaky but unoriginal paranormal thriller about a typical suburban family who become the target of bizarre goings- on. The ideas are good but the structure is pretty familiar.

ADVENTURES IN ZAMBEZIA ( G)

Stars: Abigail Breslin, Leonard Nimoy Director: Wayne Thornley Available: Now on DVD and Blu- ray A free- spirited falcon with an overprotective father longs for adventure outside his homeland in this animated tale which might give the kids a thrill with its well- meaning antics but bore most others.

DEAD MAN DOWN ( MA)

Stars: Colin Farrell, Noomi Rapace Director: Niels Arden Oplev Available: Now on DVD and Blu- ray It takes a while for the plot to reveal itself and it ends up unravelling into little more than gunplay, but there are moments in this crime thriller – about a henchman blackmailed into killing by a disfigured woman – that work well.
