WHEN the young shoots of ap­ple trees look as though they have been dipped in ash, it is pow­dery mildew dis­ease. Va­ri­eties such as Jonathan are highly sus­cep­ti­ble to in­fec­tion. Con­trol by cut­ting off and col­lect­ing all infected shoots. Take well clear and de­stroy.
