I WAS at a well- known coun­try cafe last week. “Are you af­ter lunch or af­ter­noon tea?” asked the woman I pre­sumed to be the owner- man­ager. “Lunch, please,” I replied, only to be told lunch was “fin­ished”. “What time do you fin­ish?” I asked, look­ing at my watch, which showed just a few min­utes past 2pm. “Right now!” she said – no “we could do you a nice salad” or any­thing like that, just a very em­phatic “right now”. You do won­der what tourists must think.
