AS per- capita wine con­sump­tion continues its decade- long de­cline in France, Italy and Spain, the US has be­come the world’s largest wine con­sumer. In France, the de­cline is be­ing at­trib­uted to a younger gen­er­a­tion’s grow­ing pref­er­ence for beer and spir­its and to the demise of the tra­di­tional fam­ily meal at which wine was al­ways served. In Aus­tralia, the re­verse is hap­pen­ing. Beer con­sump­tion is fall­ing and wine con­sump­tion is in­creas­ing.
