THE ROVER ( MA15+)
Stars: Guy Pearce, Robert Pattinson, Scoot McNairy
Director: David Michod
FEW would deny Australian filmmaker David Michod’s 2010 feature debut Animal
Kingdom was a world- class crime drama: an intensely unsettling study of everyday evil that hit hard, left bruises and made no apologies afterwards.
While The Rover carries the same air of malicious assurance, it struggles to remotely achieve the same impact. Set in a near- future where Australia has become a lawless, burntout husk, a brutally basic story tracks the efforts of a hard- bitten highway drifter ( Guy Pearce) to retrieve a stolen car. Anyone who dares interfere with the quest is usually shot dead at the first opportunity, a lazy default setting for a script that seems desperately underwritten.
Though Michod is able to forcefully manipulate an atmosphere rife with personal despair and social anarchy, it remains difficult for viewers to take a close interest throughout. Especially once Robert Pattinson shows up, acting all nutty and twitchy and mumbling in a Sling Blade voice. Disappointing.
