REACHING FOR THE MOON ( M)
MIRANDA Otto stars as Pulitzer Prize- winning poet Elizabeth Bishop, a fragile woman on the brink of falling apart while holidaying in Brazil in the 1950s. An intense attraction to famous architect Lota Soares ( Gloria Pires) unlocks a strength of emotion Bishop never knew she possessed and rekindles a past weakness for booze she never quite left behind. What might have been a basic, by- the- numbers biopic is enhanced by the yin and yang of two dynamically disparate performances. Together, Otto and Pires convey exactly how two people can get along like a house on fi re while simultaneously driving each other up the wall.
