DESIRE 816 HTC

$ 398

htc. com/ au IT’S a discount phone but its best features should not be discounted. The HTC Desire 816 ( far right) is a slick, plastic recreation of the HTC One, with curved corners, front- facing speakers and a 5.5- inch, 720p touchscreen you wouldn’t expect on a sub-$ 400 phone. Its profi le is just 7.9mm thin, and it not only has a 13- megapixel rear camera but a 5- megapixel “selfi e” shooter upfront. Cutbacks have been made to its processor ( 1.9GHz quad- core), storage ( 8GB), and RAM ( 1.5GB), but phone users who add a memory card should appreciate its inclusions.

LUMIA 930 NOKIA

$ 729 DON’T get distracted by the bright phone cover. It’s the 20- megapixel camera in the Lumia 930 ( right) that deserves your attention. The 5- inch, full HD, AMOLED screen adds to its appeal. A 2.2GHz quadcore chip comes as standard. However, users can’t expand its 32GB memory and face a limited app selection.

XPERIA Z1 COMPACT SONY

$ 559

sony. com. au FEW smartphones can be operated with one hand these days, but this shrunken Xperia is petite enough for the job. The Z1 Compact ( top left) features a 4.3- inch, 720p screen and, like its big Xperia Z1 brother, it features an impressive 20.7- megapixel camera, 16GB storage and waterproof body, though it compromises with a slower, 2.2GHz quad- core chip, lower- resolution screen, and 9.5mm thickness. This mid- range compact caller is better than its price or size suggests and its camera should attract fans.

MOTO E MOTOROLA

$ 179 YOU can’t buy much technology for $ 179, giving Motorola rich pickings for its budget smartphone. The Moto E ( right) tempts featurephone users with a 4.3- inch touchscreen phone, 5- megapixel camera, the latest Google Android software and a dual SIM feature. There are trade- offs, including a fi xed- focus camera, no front- facing camera, a 1.4GHz dual- core chip and a lower resolution screen. Its design and usability are commendable for the price.
