NEW STAR’S PLEASED TO BE LIKED BY CASTMATES

Sunday Tasmanian - Tassie Living - - NEWS -

EMILY Barclay’s most recent co-stars – Hollywood superhunk Michael Fassbender and Aussie comedian Josh Thomas – are poles apart.

She speaks highly of Fassbender – “a lovely man” – her co-star in Aussie flick The Light Between Oceans, which comes out next year. But she raves about Thomas and the gang on cult comedy Please Like Me.

Thomas, the show’s star and creator, says Emily, who plays new character Ella, is “a dream, I think – she’s adorable”, but dobbed her in as being an overzealous fan.

“She was at lunch one day and – how embarrassing is this? – she says to Tom (Ward), Caitlin (Stasey) and Keegan (Joyce) she really wanted to get the role because she watched the show and wanted to be in our friendship group,” Thomas says.

“C’mon, it’s a bit creepy. You could’ve kept that to yourself.”

Though slightly embarrassed, Barclay confirms the story.

“Oh God, yeah, it’s true. I really did that,” she says. “They just remind me of my friends. I would watch the show and think, ‘I want to be part of that group of friends’.

“I feel like there’s nothing else like it on Australian TV. It’s funny and feels real. It’s smart. You want to be part of that world.”

Ella’s world isn’t far removed from her own – in years, at least. Barclay, 30, says she is winning roles closer to her actual age, such as Sarah in the recent supernatural drama Glitch.

“I’m no longer at the point where I can play a 19-year-old, and that feels good,” she says. “It’s good to be able to play characters that reflect where you’re at in your life.”
