LOOKING FOR GRACE

Sunday Tasmanian - Tassie Living - - WEEK IN MOVIES -

Director: Sue Brooks ( Japanese Story) Starring: Richard Roxburgh, Radha Mitchell, Odessa Young Verdict: Search for a point proves frustrating ANOTHER one of those frustratingly middling Australian dramas, content enough to plod along for 100 minutes or so, with little or no urgency apparent. Rising star Odessa Young ( soon to be seen in the much- buzzed The Daughter)

plays the title character, a young runaway on the loose somewhere in rural WA. Grace has hit the open road with a stash of cash swiped from her parents ( Richard Roxburgh and Radha Mitchell), who don’t seem to be the hurry- upand- find- her types. A looping episodic structure – where the narrative doubles back to replay timeframes from a fresh perspective – is a device which rarely works in the movie’s storytelling favour. After what has been an exciting and vibrant past year for Australian cinema, this meandering and often inert effort feels like a return to the bland old days.
