WHEN 800 Words wrapped filming last year, newcomer Melina Vidler was aware the series may not find an audience, let alone a second season, in Australia.

So she went and found a couple of jobs to keep her busy while she waited to hear the show’s fate.

Given 800 Words was the number one rating drama of 2015 and Vidler herself went on to win a Logie for her role as transplanted teen Shay, she could have twiddled her thumbs in the break.

But Vidler is glad she didn’t as the first of those jobs – a guest role in

Rake – airs this week. “I play Monique, Fuzz’s (Keegan Joyce) new girlfriend. I’m a bit of a … I wouldn’t say crazy, but a bit of an emotionally manipulative character. It was fun,” she says.

“Richard Roxburgh (star and cocreator of the series) is just amazing. Getting to work with him, I’m just so blessed. To see how he works, but also how he interacts with people. He’s the Erik [Thomson] of Rake and he knows how to be a leader. It’s so interesting to see that.

Having dyed her hair brunette for the second of her jobs – she’ll be playing Alexandra Brock in Ten’s upcoming Peter Brock telemovie – Vidler relished the chance to stretch her wings before returning to the set of 800 Words, where she is filming the upcoming second season.

“Monique is completely different from Alexandra Brock who is also completely different from Shay,” she says.

“So coming back to season two I can approach Shay from a bit of a different angle… I can settle in and take what I liked and didn’t like about my performances.”
