8.30PM, ACTION/ADVENTURE ★★★
Both an entertaining and eminently disposable superhero movie from the dominant Marvel Studios stable. While not the genrebending crowd-pleaser that last year’s Marvel smash Guardians of the Galaxy refreshingly turned out to be, the blockbuster bloat that bogged down the recent Avengers: Age of Ultron is appreciably absent. In short, thanks to some catchy comedy stylings and a breezy, easygoing take on its hero’s origin story, Ant-Man will simply show you a good time and then show you the door. Paul Rudd makes a good fit for the self-deprecating humour in play, starring as a former white-collar crook who must shrink to microscopic size to stop a weapon of mass reduction falling into the wrong hands. Hardly essential, but an energetically crafted and unapologetically fun exercise in outsized escapism.
