A bit of a mind bender

MOST often our weekly mystery item is from a bygone era and although very cool they are not very useful in 2016.

However this one, which dates back to the 1920s, still has a modern day application.

It has a small metal sheet that is connected to a wire frame and some knobs.

It bends more than you might think and that has an effect on its output. The item can be shaken, but not stirred. Its can be rather loud or the polar opposite.

Over the years this item — or one like it — has been useful for musicians ranging from opera to funk, from jazz to punk to hip-hop music. Even long-running cartoon The Simpsons has a link to this item.
