DIS­COV­ERED at an­tiques hot spot the Drill Hall Em­po­rium in New Nor­folk, this Vic­to­rian item was used to mea­sure the cir­cum­fer­ence of a per­son’s head to en­sure their hat was the cor­rect size.

The first reader with the cor­rect an­swer was Roger Wolfe who wrote to us at about 8.30am Sun­day. Oth­ers, in­clud­ing Rus­sell An­drews, Adrian Jack, Gary Tew, Lindy Hart­stonge, Peter Hill, Jan Bly­ton, Kate Lu­cas, Oreste Scarafiotti and Keith Brown, all had the cor­rect an­swer.

A cigar cut­ter and a shirt neck mea­sur­ing de­vice were among the sug­ges­tions.
