As a handful of readers guessed, last week’s mystery item was a wooden French duck press for making duck terrines.
Many readers wrote in with the same guess, they all thought that it was used for pressing tongue, mostly ox but a few other variations on that idea too. Another reader suggested it could have been used for canning (it really does look like that was a possibility). A solid guess was a contraption for extracting oil to use in perfume.
