Hobart builders WD Bryan Joinery on why their bathrooms are making a splash
ALMOST every year, the work of WD Bryan Joinery House features highly in the annual HIA Awards — very often as a winner in the bathroom or kitchen categories.
At the 2016 awards, this family operated, Glenorchy-based business took home the top award in the bathrooms category for its skilled work building a sleek bathroom in an older New Town home.
Managing director Warren Bryan said while they were always proud to win an award for their work, the most important thing was delivering an extension, kitchen or bathroom for their clients that they are thrilled with.
“We get a lot of work through word of mouth, people come to us because of the our reputation for quality – locals and people from interstate too,” he said.
“For the project that recently won the bathroom of the year we needed to match the style of the house. Our client was after wow factor but still in keeping with the character of the home’s era.”
Mr Bryan said the homeowners were very happy to win bathroom of the year.
“They wrote us a letter afterwards, which was nice,” he said.
“In their assessment, the judges noted that the bathroom’s timber slats – which was an idea that originally came from our clients – added texture to the space.
“It was something we worked on with them to incorporate their ideas into the bathroom.”
Mr Bryan said carrying the theme of the house into the bathroom was his favourite aspect of this project.
“It’s perfectly in character with the whole house,” he said.
“If we had built an ultra-modern bathroom, it may not have suited this home quite as well.”
Timber features prominently in the bathroom, which is far from traditional, however, Mr Bryan said if it is treated properly the steam and water would be no problem.
The bathroom also has a Staron benchtop, brushed aluminium kickboards, soft-close drawers, a custommade vanity, an LED strip light integrated into the decorative moulding above the mirrored cabinet, a frameless shower, underfloor heating and an extended skylight.
After setting a high bar for their business over the years, Mr Bryan said winning an award like this was still a challenge that his team thrived on.
