Woolly aphids

Many ap­ple tree branches are now un­der at­tack from woolly aphids. We can­not see these dam­ag­ing sap-suck­ers be­cause they are hid­den be­neath a mass of white, cot­ton wool-like ma­te­rial. This is a pro­tec­tive waxy cover. A sim­ple con­trol is to use an old paint­brush to ap­ply methy­lated spirit di­rectly to the colonies for an in­stant kill.
