Langford REASON to watch

Katherine Langford may not yet be a household name, but by week’s end, she will be the girl the TV world is talking about, writes HOLLY BYRNES

IN her first acting role, Perth actor Katherine Langford stars in new Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, which will undeniably launch her career.

Langford, 20, plays high school student Hannah, who takes her own life – but not before leaving behind a box of cassettes documenting her death and pointing the finger at those she accuses of contributing to it.

It is explicit in its treatment of teen suicide, sexual assault and grief; and parental guidance is recommended.

The 13-part series celebrates its “unbridled authenticity” rather than recoils from it.

Creator Brian Yorkey praised the courage of the young cast, especially Langford, who worked with medical and psychological experts to “help us accurately portray these events and ensure we were being truthful to the ‘how’ and ‘why’ these kinds of things happen”.

“Such huge responsibilities on the shoulders of such young people,” Yorkey says. “It was important for us not to look away from the most difficult moments.

“It was not easy … but we hope it will matter.”
