Last week’s What Is It? item from Antiques to Retro, was a boxwood plumbers’ lead chasing wedge circa 1900, used for shaping lead roof flashing. Keith Brown was the fastest in with the correct answer. While Adrian Jack, Lynn Mather, Dean Midgely, Mandy and Gage Kidd, Peter Higgs, Lewis Parsons, Peter Hill and Barry Morgan all also identified it correctly. Mr Morgan, who identified himself as an ‘old-time plumber’ also offered the best explanation, saying it was used by old-time plumbers to assist in forming corners in lead sheet. He added, the best tools for lead work were always made from boxwood.
