Hardy perennials with brightly-coloured foliage are fairly rare. Worth searching for are any of the Libertia tribe. Long, narrow leaves on some species, especially L. peregrinans grow 300mm high and develop a permanent bright, orange-copper colour, becomes a glowing gold during the coldest parts of the year. They soon form large spreading clumps, topped in spring and summer by dozens of delicate, orchid-like white flowers.
