Many of us have a contemporary version of this at home but this particular item dates from about 1900.
Many variations of this item have been produced since the 16th century in a range of shapes, sizes and materials, from wood to earthenware, zinc, copper, brass, glass and more.
The specific purpose of this item means it is most commonly found in places like the southern parts of Australia and northern Europe.
