Most large-flowered clematis bloom in spring or early summer. They can be pruned this month. Cut stems back very hard, preferably to a pair of fat buds about one-third of a metre from the ground. They grow fast from late August and most will be in bloom by early summer. The smaller flowering Clematis montana is pruned after flowering in November.
