JUDGING by the relatively few readers to solve last week’s mystery it seems it was a little harder to figure out than the previous one. Last week’s item was a flensing tool used by whalers to strip whale blubber from the skin. The vintage tool now considered to be quite rare would have been common place in the 1800s. They were used like a knife, to slice strips off the whale carcass. These were then boiled to extract the highly sought after oil. Those who had the correct answer included Cathy Jenkins, Barry Wilson, Stewart Ross, Bryce Atkinson, Frank Verbeek, Diane Thompson, Adrian Jack, and Keith Brown.
