Dahlias are among the greatest of all plants for non-stop summer blooms. Many are so vividly-coloured and flamboyant they can make other flowering plant appear drab, so are best grown separately. My own favourites include ‘drumstick’ cultivars which form flower-heads about the size of golf balls. The small size makes them particularly suitable for vases because they are not top-heavy.
