This one’s a baffling brass beauty

This week’s undated mystery gadget comes from Paul Mineur of North Hobart. The item consists of three adjustable screws, one loaded with a spring, threaded through a metal bracket.

It is one of the most trusted tools of its trade, needed for solving an inevitable problem that comes with use.

Howeve, be warned amateurs: you may cause more harm than good if you try and use it unsupervised.

Older models could be fashioned from cork, felt, and/or thread spools, but are now made from more sturdy materials such as brass or titanium.

It may look familiar, but can you tell what this is specifically used for?
