Sunday Tasmanian - - News - REX GARDNER COLUMN,

TASMANIAN tourism leaders expect more new, direct flights into Hobart within the next year.

Hopes are high that direct flights to and from Adelaide will start soon.

Hobart-Auckland is also a possibility, opening up the large New Zealand tourist market.

But the big one will be Hobart-Perth.

Perth is fast becoming an international aviation hub, with increasing traffic from Asia and direct flights to and from Lon- don due to start next year.

With the Hobart International Airport runway extension due to be completed by March and direct flights expected from Asia, particularly the massive Chinese tourist market, it’s a strong position for a State Government heading into election mode.

Hobart Airport is experiencing its busiest year ever with more than 2.4 million passengers travelling through in the past 12 months.
