READ­ERS of the Mer­cury and Sun­day Tas­ma­nian can ex­plore the state’s his­tory in our spe­cial 10-part magazine se­ries of pho­tos of life dur­ing World War II.

The third an­nual Pic­tures of our Past se­ries cov­ers top­ics in­clud­ing school days, re­gat­tas and shows, Tas­ma­nia at war, sport and more, all re­flect­ing life in the is­land state in 1940.

We have searched the Mer­cury ar­chive — housed at the Tas­ma­nian Ar­chive and Her­itage Of­fice — for the best and most rep­re­sen­ta­tive im­ages from 1940.

The liftout se­ries starts to­day with school days and con­tin­ues in the Mer­cury and Sun­day Tas­ma­nian un­til Septem­ber 19.

Read­ers are in­vited to send in pho­tos from 1940, or a few years ei­ther side, for pos­si­ble in­clu­sion in the Sun­day Tas­ma­nian at the end of the se­ries.

Of par­tic­u­lar in­ter­est would be per­sonal pho­tos of fam­ily ex­pe­ri­ences of World War II.
