PRODRIVE racers Mark Winterbottom and Cam Waters have announced themselves as genuine threats for the 2017 Bathurst 1000 after clocking the highest speeds of the Top Ten Shootout.

According to the speed trap on Conrod Straight, Waters hit 286km/h in his Ford Falcon while Winterbottom was just behind in 285km/h.

The powerful runs came after the pair both had engine upgrades rushed in for the most recent round at Sandown.

While Scott McLaughlin was the undeniable star of the afternoon, earning pole after once again setting a new ‘‘Lap of the Gods’’ record, the Prodrive duo showed they too would be right in the mix.

Winterbottom, who won ‘‘The Great Race’’ four years ago, finished third in 2:04.49.

Rising star Waters was fourth in 2:04.58.

Shane Van Gisbergen powered around the Mt Panorama course in 2:04.66 — enough to put him into fifth place.
