THE French Open has a habit of catapulting unknowns on to the international stage.

Last year, among others, it was Jelena Ostapenko, the effervescent Latvian who charged to victory, having never even previously won a tour-level title.

This season, among others, Romanian Mihaela Buzarnescu is causing ripples at Roland Garros.

At 30, Buzarnescu has previously contested just two grand slam matches, failing in both.

She is now into the fourth round after eliminating fourth seed Elina Svitolina 6-3, 7-5 in the biggest win of a career spent in the tennis wilderness.

Ranked 377th in the world a year ago, she is yet to drop a set at Roland Garros.
