Tassie in under-13 title hunt

Sunday Tasmanian - - SPORT - ADAM CLIFFORD

TASMANIA’S teams remain unbeaten after day three in both the boys’ and girls’ competitions at the national under -13 hockey championships.

Tasmania’s girls defeated ACT 1-0, with a neat penaltycorner strike from Emma O’Grady moving them up into fifth position on the table.

Tasmanian coach Nic Duffy identified Giselle Fernandez, Ellie McDonald and Ash DeMarco as her best players in a confidence-boosting win.

“We’re very happy to win that as we dominated the play, earning plenty of penaltycorner attack opportunities and did not concede any defensively,” Duffy said.

“I was particularly pleased with our fast play and passing work down the right-hand side of the pitch.”

The Tasmanian boys also looked headed for the winners’ circle with a late goal to Harry Gregson capping a dominant first half for the home side.

But the ACT rallied to equalise 12 minutes from full time in a tale of two halves for Tassie coach Bianca LanghamPritchard.

“We are disappointed as we didn’t convert the many opportunities that we created in the first half,” LanghamPritchard said.

“In the second half, ACT simply came out harder and caught us on the back foot, so there are lessons to be learned there for us.”

Tasmania’s boys face ladder leader West Australia Storm at 2.30pm, while the girls meet South Australia at 5.45pm.
