A TASMANIAN motorist who was already disqualified from driving has been charged and detained to appear in court after recording a blood-alcohol reading more than six times the legal limit.

Police nabbed the driver in Maitland St, Launceston, about midday yesterday after noticing a large amount of smoke coming from the vehicle.

A police spokesperson said it wasn’t the first driving offence for the motorist.

“At the time of the intercept, the driver was disqualified having been issued a police excessive drink driving notice 15 days ago due to another high-level drink-driving incident,” the spokesperson said. The driver was breath tested on the spot, and a later breath test at Launceston Police Station resulted in a reading of 0.305 — more than six times over the allowed 0.05.
